Welcome to Samvadini Sadhana

The harmonium, notwithstanding its origin in the western world, has become practically indispensable in all forms of Indian music- classical, semi classical as well as light. Many Indian households, with any sort of musical background, will invariably have a harmonium in its possession. But in spite of such popularity, it also happens to be the most controversial musical instrument. There were some who disliked it so much that it was banned on All Indie Radio. At the same time there were some who were so enamoured by its endearing qualities that they spent their entire lives exploring and developing its full potential.

This is a site dedicated to an extraordinary musician as well as to the versatile yet controversial instrument that literally sang when he played it. Late Pandit Vishwanath Pendharkar, perhaps not so well known to todays younger generation of musicians, was a much loved and respected figure in the world of Hindustani classical music in the latter part of the 20th century. He was a much sought after harmonium accompanist though his creative skills as a solo artist were not known to many.
His beloved instrument, the harmonium or samvadini also suffered a similar fate. Although most vocalists relied heavily on it,it was vilified as most unsuitable for Indian classical music due to its chromatic tuning as well as lack of meend(glide).

About the Project

AIM of the Project: To make available to every harmonium lover, the beauty and intricacies of Pendharkar Gharana and also to be a one stop site for all information related to the harmonium- Its history, structure, tuning, styles of playing, stalwarts of the past, present artists etc.
Dr Dilip Gaitonde, Pendharkarji’s senior disciple, dreamt of giving a wider exposure to Panditji’s ideas as well as to the work done by many harmonium stalwarts who have worked tirelessly to explore the full potential of this wonderful instrument. Thus was born Samvadhini Sadhana, a place, where all harmonium lovers can come together and continue this yadnya to give harmonium its rightful place in the world of music.
